I actually did ALOT of testing to find the differences between a mouse and joystick while fighting. I was able to do much better using the mouse to fire at targets because I can move the gun-site. Learning where all the buttons to change orientation and throttle was a pain but once I had it all figured out I got to wave 86 on instant action.
We think about the joystick mode ... more like a "x" mode ...
The default gameplay (with keyboard and mouse) is (intended) somehow easier ... but if you really want to feel like a spacefighter pilot ... you take a good joystick ... no more autoaiming

, use the HAT for strafes ... and feel the vibe of any single shoot from your guns
